Izzat Darwazeh obtained his first degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan in 1984. He obtained the MSc and PhD degrees, from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), in 1986 and 1991, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral research Fellow at the University of Wales - Bangor -UK from 1990 till 1993, researching very high speed optical systems and advanced MMICs for optical communications applications. He was a Senior Lecturer in Optoelectronic Circuits and Systems in the Department at Electrical Engineering and Electronics at UMIST. He moved to University College London in October 2001.

His teaching covers aspects of optical fibre communications, telecommunication networks and high speed integrated circuits and MMICs. His research interests are mainly in the areas of high speed optical communication systems and networks, microwave circuits and MMICs for optical fibre applications and in mobile communication circuits and systems. He has authored/co-authored more than 120 papers in the areas of optical and wireless (cellular) communications and MMICs and high speed/frequency circuits. He is the co-editor of the IEE book on "Analogue Optical Communications" and the co-author (with Luis Moura) of "Linear Circuit Analysis and Modelling: From DC to RF". He acts as a consultant to several UK and international organisations and commercial bodies and he serves on a wide range of professional committees.

Since 2001 he has been with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, UCL, becoming a Professor of Telecommunications Engineering in 2006.

Research areas of interest include:

Optical Communications

  • Multi-Gbit/s MIC, MMIC and OEIC circuits for optical and mobile communications
  • Distributed amplifier structures constructed using HBT devices.
  • High bit rate HEMT-distributed amplifier MMICs for optical receiver applications.
  • Signal shaping and filtering for 2.5, 10 and 40 Gbit/s systems.
  • Multiplexed video transmission over optical fibre for CATV applications
  • Optical fibre long haul systems modelling and optimization

Wireless Communications

  • System modeling and performance analysis (GSM, EDGE and 3G)
  • Base station receivers
  • ACI and noise effects in cellular systems
  • OFDM systems; receiver design and system modelling
  • Wireless LANs at 40 and 60 GHz.

Circuits design and modelling

  • Ultra-broad band circuit design
  • Noise modelling
