Welcome to the website of the Optical Networks Group

The Optical Networks Group (ONG) is a research group within the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department at UCL studying optical communications, operating on all time and length scales.  We are also interested in all linear and nonlinear phenomena related to the propagation of optical signals in different media, including different types of fibres and free-space.

Our current research is focused on:

  • network architectures: wide-area, access & interconnects
  • network routing and control: adaptive, dynamic & intelligent
  • high-speed transmission systems: use of advanced modulation formats, optimised detection and digital signal processing to increase system and network capacity in a variety of fibre types

Some of our current projects include: EPSRC Programme UNLOC - Unlocking the capacity of optical communications, High-speed Optical TransmissionCognitive Networks Enabled by Coherent TransceiversDynamic Optical Networks, Photonic Interconnects
