'Recovery of Data from Damaged EEPROMS'
New Grant Award

Damaged SIM card

The Forensic Science Service and EPSRC are sponsoring a CASE studentship at UCL to investigate techniques for the recovery of valuable information from damaged SIM cards and other electronic memory devices. The recovery of data from cards that have been involved in fires or explosions is becoming more and more important as such devices are being used in terrorism and other forms of serious crime. The UCL team are working on techniques to read the data directly from the silicon chip without making electrical contact or re-wiring the device, as in many cases only fragments of the chip may be found at the scene of a crime. Our work has already generated significant media interest, even at such an early stage (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/news-articles/0801/08012304).
