NEW EU Project

ENVISION
We are  pleased to announce ENVISION: a major new EU project in the Communications and Information Systems Group due to start in January 2010, worth £900,000 to UCL over three years. Congratulations to Dr David Griffin, Dr Miguel Rio and Dr Eleni Mykoniati who coordinated and led the consortium, where UCL is the prime contractor.

The ENVISION project is a major extension to our research work in CISG over the last 3 years on the PeerLive EPSRC project. PeerLive investigated live audio-visual streaming over completely decentralised Peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays. ENVISION will take our results a stage further by expanding the scope of the overlay applications from single sourced AV streaming to multi-sourced, highly interactive distributed meshes of HD and 3D multi-sensory channels and will put our research in the context of a large collaborative project with significant opportunities for industrial exploitation.

Such ambitious extensions to PeerLive could not be undertaken solely by the UCL EE team so we have joined forces with a consortium of external organisations from relevant industrial and research sectors and sought funding under the EU FP7 programme. Our partners are: Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, Orange/France Telecom Labs, Telefonica R&D Labs, the Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique, and LiveU (an SME developing innovative audio-video upload technology that does not require pre-provisioned network infrastructure).
