You are warmly invited to attend Professor Polina Bayvel's forthcoming Inaugural Retrospective Lecture at UCL entitled 'Optical networks - retro - and prospective reflections' that will take place on Thursday 13th December in the Roberts Building Lecture Theatre 106, UCL from 17.00-18.00.
Optical networks have come a long way - both globally and in UCL. In under 50 years since they have first been proposed and demonstrated as a potential, low-loss medium for data transmission, optical (or glass) fibres now carry the bulk of all data traffic, and have underpinned the Internet explosion.
The Optical Networks Group at UCL was the first academic optical communications systems & networks research group to be set up in a UK university in 1994 and its researchers have made major contributions to the success of the field.
This lecture is a retrospective look at the success of the optical networks story, and a forward look at the techniques and research needed to overcome physical limits to further capacity and bandwidth increases.
The Lecture will be preceded by tea, coffee and cakes from 16.30 in the Roberts Building Foyer.
Should you wish to attend the reception and lecture please RSVP to Tim Bodley-Scott (firstname.lastname@example.org) by no later than 6th December for catering purposes.
