Dr Martyn Fice has MA (Natural Sciences and Electrical Sciences) and PhD degrees from Cambridge University.  His PhD research investigated the application of electron-beam lithography to the fabrication of Bragg gratings for 1550 nm DFB semiconductor lasers.

He subsequently joined STC Technology Limited, Harlow (later Nortel), initially working on the design and development of InP-based semiconductor lasers for undersea optical systems and other applications. Later work at Nortel involved research into various aspects of optical communications systems and networks, including wavelength division multiplexing, all-optical wavelength conversion, optical regeneration, and optical packet switching.

He joined the Photonics Group at UCL in 2005 as a Senior Research Fellow, becoming a Lecturer in 2014.

Current research interests include:

  • Optical communications systems and networks
  • Coherent optical detection
  • Photonic integration
  • Optical phase locking techniques
  • Millimetre- and THz-wave generation and detection
  • High-capacity wireless communications systems
  • Convergence of optical and wireless access networks
