Ryan received his Bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering with first class honours from Cardiff University in 2007 and a Masters degree in Electrical, Electronic Engineering and Automatic Control from the University of Nice – Sophia Antipolis, France in 2008. From 2008 until 2013, he worked in the Communications and Information Systems Group (CISG) at UCL graduating with a doctorate (EngD) in Communications in 2013.

His doctoral work involved the modelling, design and hardware implementation of novel communication transceivers aimed at improving spectrum efficiency in next generation wireless networks. Ryan has held different engineering positions in industry including FinTech companies and was previously responsible for managing a £300k EPSRC-funded technology exchange hub within the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) at UCL.

Since 2015, he has been working as a Teaching Fellow in the EEE department teaching a number of courses in wireless and mobile communications, embedded design, connected systems and the Internet of Things.

Ryan's background is in signal processing for communications with experience in designing and implementing communication transceivers using digital signal processors (DSPs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). His current research interests lie in the following areas:

  • Novel communication algorithms for improving spectrum efficiency
  • Software defined radio (SDR)
  • Testbeds for Internet of Things (IoT) applications
  • Data analytics in IoT systems

Ryan is also an avid supporter of STEM education and entrepreneurship.
