Cumberland Lodge
Dates
Starts on: 26th October 2011
Ends on: 28th October 2011
Introduction
It is extremely important that you develop your interpersonal and professional skills while you are at university and that you become an effective ‘problem-solver’, in addition to gaining knowledge in your academic subject area.
In the last week of October of your first year, the department invites you on a three day (Wednesday to Friday) residential trip to Cumberland Lodge, situated in Windsor Great Park. The purpose of this trip is to explore areas of Electronic and Electrical Engineering not formally covered in the curriculum. It will come as no surprise that the team building exercise proves to be the most popular event, with a prize at the end for the best team.
There is also a free afternoon for you to explore Great Windsor Park or visit Windsor Castle. Cumberland Lodge is a large country house and the perfect venue to get to know your fellow students and academic staff in an idyllic location with a high standard of accommodation and cuisine. Places are limited to 36 students so booking early is essential.
Courses
Courses include "Team Building", "A First Year Survival Guide", "Problem Based Learning", "The Moral Maze", and many other exciting topics.
Where
Cumberland Lodge is a charitable foundation which houses conferences, retreats and seminars on social matters, ethics and international issues. It is wholly independent and therefore attracts speakers and participants from all the talents. Guests at Cumberland Lodge enjoy food from award-winning chefs and graceful accommodation in historic and tranquil surroundings. Its Patron is The Queen, who has granted sole occupancy of a splendid seventeenth-century house for discussions aimed at the betterment of society.
Residential Fee
There is a small fee (heavily subsidised by the department) per student which covers all travel, accommodation and excellent food costs.
Booking
A registration form must be completed. Further details and a registration form are given to you in your first week of term.
Comments from students
"I enjoyed the Cumberland Lodge visit immensely. It provides an excellent environment in which to establish friendships amongst peers, with the team building exercises really emphasising individual characters. The lodge itself is set in heart of the Great Windsor Park and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. All of the facilities provided are first class, and the catering service provided is out of this world. The Cumberland Lodge visit is an all around amazing trip, which I would recommend to anybody!"
