The Provost's Engineering Engagement Awards

Success for the Department

Congratulations to EEE staff and students for their hard-work, passion and commitment to engineering engagement, recognised at the inaugural Provost's Engineering Engagement Awards, lead by UCL Provost and President Professor Michael Arthur and Dean of Engineering Science, Professor Anthony Finkelstein.

Two academic staff, two support staff as well as our undergraduate student society, the Fleming Society, all won prizes at the Awards. Dr Benn Thomsen won the "Academic / Research Staff (Grade 8+)" category and Dr Sally Day came runner-up in the same category.

Dr Thomsen, pictured here with young visitors to the recent Wellcome Collection / UCL "On Light" festival on 2nd May, is an experienced communicator who has taken the lead in many engagement activities. He is currently working with UNLOC students on a series of experiments to take to the London Big Bang Fairs in July 2015.

The department's Fleming Society won the "Research Group or Team" category and Andy Moss and Gerald McBrearty in our Support team were both runners-up in the "Professional / Support Staff" category.

The Provost's Engineering Engagement Awards celebrate the work that the staff and students of UCL's Faculty of Engineering Sciences put into communicating their research to children and young people. They aim to recognise those whose engagement work is particularly high-quality or innovative in nature.

Dr Elpida Makrygianni, Faculty Engineering Education Developer & Coordinator, who organised the Awards, said:

"Congratulations to your department for doing such fantastic work for engineering engagement with young people and schools over the past year. What your staff and students have achieved is really outstanding."
