PhD Studentship: Machine Learning Algorithms for Immersive Communication Strategies

A fully-funded PhD studentship is available to home UK students within the project of machine learning algorithms for immersive communication. The studentship is available from 1st December 2016, for a period of three years. The student will work under the supervision of Dr.Laura Toni within the Communication and Information System at UCL.
Recent advances in video technology have moved the research toward novel interactive Multiview services, such as 360-degree videos (e.g., 360 YouTube videos and Google Cardboard), and virtual reality (e.g., Oculus Rift, Immerge Lytro camera), where users can actively interact with the scene. Because of their interactivity, users are no longer seen as mere terminals interconnected by links but active players in the communication with all possible level of interactivity: from passively consuming contents, to actively crafting ones own media stream and social experience. This user-centric paradigm calls for adaptation of streaming policies to both the nature of the content of the communication and the social dynamics among users to face the astonishing diversity of novel networks. An open challenge is to propose navigation- awareness coding and streaming techniques able to cope with this large heterogeneity. By learning users behaviors from the past, real-time video streaming can be optimized to nicely address future users requests.
Applicants must hold, or be near completion of a first or upper-second class degree in Engineering or a related subject. An understanding of machine learning and optimization algorithms is required. The ideal candidate would also have a strong interest in computer programming, communications systems, or multimedia processing. We are seeking candidate with the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a three-year period of study. Fluent English is also required.

The studentship is available for three years and covers tuition fees at the UK rate, plus a stipend at £16,296 pa (tax free).
