Salary : UCL Grade 7: £35,328 - £42,701 per annum (inclusive of London Allowance)

Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking to appoint a Research Associate in Photonics (HyperTerahertz) who will work closely with experimentalists and theoreticians within the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and, for some projects, the London Centre for Nanotechnology and with other researchers, performing experiments on similar topics.

Due to the nature of the programme the job function will cover multiple aspects and the person appointed would be expected to perform the majority of them. The main duties will include designing and testing uni-travelling carrier photodetector devices for spectroscopy and imaging applications as well as performing experimental work at either component or system level. The successful applicant will also be expected to develop novel antenna and waveguides for operation in the THz range and coupling with both optics and THz signals from other sources. The postholder will also be required to publish in peer reviewed journals and international conferences.

The position is funded until the 31st May 2020 in the first instance although further funding to support the post may be available.

Key Requirements

Applicants should hold a PhD degree (or be about to be awarded ) in a relevant branch of science or engineering, ie physics, materials science, electrical or electronic engineering  as well as having a good working knowledge of photonics. Experience in designing devices and on chip antenna and plasmonic waveguides at THz frequencies using CST studio is essential as  is excellent knowledge of computational software for analysing experimental data such as Origin, MATLAB or MATHEMATICA. It's desirable that applicants have experience of collaborative projects with external partners.

If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections,once the PhD has been awarded. The salary scale for Research Assistant (Grade 6B), point 24-26 is £30,922 - £32,607 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance of £3,092 per annum.
