As part of our work in advanced communication systems, the UCL EEE Communications and Information Systems Group invites applications for a post-doctorial research position in system and circuit design visible light communications. The post is funded from a new EPSRC grant with the title 'Multifunctional Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes with Visible Light Communications (MARVEL)'.In this research we aim to develop the world's first complete visible light communication (VLC) system, using organic/polymer optoelectronic components and to demonstrate this in realistic system settings. In the proposal we will design and fabricate: Polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) and detectors; transceiver electronic circuits and digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) components. The designed devices and
sub-systems will be integrated into a complete VLC system, transmitting data under realistic environmental conditions. Furthermore, specially optimised signals and modulation formats will be designed to achieve 100s Mbit/s capacity over a transmission span 1-2 meters (a typical office/home range ) and assess performance in a specially assembled indoor environment.We are looking for a talented post-doctorial researcher, ideally with substantial experience, to join our team and help us fulfil the projects' goals, producing quality research, undertaking design and development work, as well as publishing high quality research papers. The successful candidate will work within an established research team in the Communications and Information Systems and the Electronic Materials and Devices Groups of the UCL's Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and will collaborate with our project partners in the London Centre of Nanotechnology. The post is available for 24 months in the first instance, further funding to support the post may be available.
Applicants are required to have a PhD in Electronic Engineering or a related field or equivalent research experience as well as a strong undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area. Applicants should also have knowledge and/or hands on experience in one or more of the following areas: optical communication system design, communications systems and digital modulation, digital signal processing, optoelectronic circuit design, optical components design, fabrication and characterisation, communications systems modelling and implementation, mathematical skills and programming.. The successful applicant should also a good publication record in the field as well as the ability to design and test communication systems. For appointment at Senior Research Associate level, applicants must have experience of working in multidisciplinary teams and experience in writing research funding proposals.
