Research Associate: Structural dynamics of amorphous functional oxides - the role of morphology and electrical stress

Photonic & Nanoelectronic Materials Lab

We wish to recruit a Research Associate to work on a project investigating how the structure of oxide materials changes under electrical stress. The work is a collaboration between the Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Physics & Astronomy departments, and is supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The post holder will work with Professor A.J. Kenyon and will be part of the UCL Photonic & Nanoelectronic Materials lab.

The research will include conductive atomic force microscopy and tomography of samples, sample preparation and device fabrication, electrical measurements and other physical characterisation. The post holder will also work closely with colleagues in Physics and Astronomy on models for structural dynamics at the atomic scale.

The post holder will either require a PhD in an engineering or physical sciences subject, or be in a position to submit their thesis shortly after the start of the position. They will also require a Masters-level qualification in nanotechnology or related subject, and a strong research track record of publications in the area of conductive atomic force microscopy and resistive switching in oxides.

The appointment is available from 1st October 2017 for a period of 30 months in the first instance, further funding to support the post may be available.

The post is Grade 7, however if the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant. Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections.

Research Assistant: Grade 6, point 24-26. Salary £29,809 to £31,432 pa inc. London Allowance of £2,980 pa).

Research Associate: Grade 7 salary range of £34,056 - £36,923 (inc. London Allowance of £2,980 pa).
