Introduction
The group was founded by Professor Polina Bayvel in 1994 and builds on UCL's distinguished history and record research in optoelectronics, optical fibre technology and digital optics, which include the pioneering contributions by Professor John Midwinter.
The research in the group is in three areas, covering the important areas of optical communication network architectures, high-speed multi-wavelength (WDM) optical fibre transmission and advanced opto-electronic devices, including low-chirp and short pulse sources, optical regenerators and routers.
The group has built up a unique and well-equipped research laboratory enabling high-speed experiments and combines this with strengths in analytical techniques and modelling, covering both the physical propagation as well as network and algorithm analysis and design.
We have successful and productive collaborations with industry and academia - both in the UK and internationally. Our group is very cosmopolitan and we welcome research collaborations, exchanges and applications at the postdoctoral, postgraduate and undergraduate levels, for all of which funding and fellowships may be available (please see 'Vacancies').
If you have any questions about the group or our research or wish to apply for a PhD or a postdoctoral position, please contact Prof. Polina Bayvel, pbayvel@ee.ucl.ac.uk. For PhD applications, please complete a postgraduate admissions form, available from here.
