Prof Charles Kao receiving the IEE Prize from former head of Department, Prof John Midwinter


Charles Kao, who studied for his PhD with Professor Harold Barlow, former head of the Department and pioneer of low loss microwave waveguides, has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for Physics for his invention of low loss optical fibres and their application to global communication systems.
