"Nanostructures: from lasers to memories of the future"

kenyon_poster.jpgProfessor Tony Kenyon, Professor of Nanoelectronic and Nanophotonic Materials and Vice-Dean (Research) gave his Inaugural Lecture on 24th November 2016 to a packed audience of colleagues, friends and family. Following an introduction by our Head of Department, Professor Sarah Spurgeon, Tony gave an inspiring talk about his work in nanotechnology and photonics that is increasingly spanning multiple research areas including new, faster, resistive random access memory (RRAM) which has shown 400x lower switching energy and 6x lower voltage than current flash memory. Following the lecture, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Science, Professor Nigel Titchener-Hooker gave the Vote of Thanks.

Before the lecture, several undergraduates including Daniel Mannion pictured from the department, gave a jazz performance during a drinks reception. A dinner for invited guests followed the lecture.

Abstract

Controlling the structure of materials at the nanometre scale allows us to fundamentally change their properties and develop new technologies that could transform our lives. In this lecture I will give a flavour of some of my group's work investigating and controlling the optical and electrical properties of nanostructured materials, and show how these can be exploited in exciting new ways.

From lasers to novel memory technologies and devices that mimic biological neurons, with many other stopping-off points in between, I will try to give a picture of how curiosity can drive research into new and exciting directions and challenge our understanding of familiar materials.

About Professor Tony Kenyon

Tony Kenyon is currently the Vice Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Professor of Nanoelectronic & Nanophotonic Materials in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering. His research interests include resistance switching; RRAM; neuromorphic devices; nanostructured materials for electronics and photonics; silicon photonics, and self-assembled nanoscale systems.

Professor Kenyon is a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the IET, a Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of the EPSRC ICT Strategic Advisory Team, and serves on the Executive Committee of the European Materials Research Society. He is the author of more than 90 peer-reviewed publications, and sits on the editorial board of several journals. He regularly gives invited talks at major international meetings, and has co-organised a number of international symposia. Tony is working closely with UCL Business to commercialise his resistance switching research, and is currently setting up a spin-out company (Intrinsic Semiconductor Technology) to develop novel RRAM devices and applications.

Tony received a BSc and D.Phil in Chemical Physics from the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK in 1986 and 1992, respectively, and joined UCL shortly afterwards. He was promoted to a Chair in Nanoelectronic & Nanophotonic Materials in 2014.
