Professor Polina Bayvel awarded CBE

UCL Engineering on the 2017 new year honours list

Congratulations to Prof Polina Bayvel, Director of UNLOC and Professor of Optical Communications and Networks at UCL Electronic & Electrical Engineering who has been awarded a CBE for services to engineering in the Queen's 2017 New Year Honours List.

Prof Bayvel is the Head of the Optical Networks Group at UCL which she established in 1994.

Prof Bayvel's research has evolved around maximising the speed and capacity of optical fibre communications, and the fundamental studies of capacity-limiting optical nonlinearities and their mitigation. More specifically her interests include wavelength-routed optical networks, high-speed optical transmission and the study and mitigation of fibre nonlinearities. She was one of the first to show the feasibility of using the wavelength domain for routing in optical networks and designed wavelength-selective devices needed for their characterisation and implementation. She has authored or co-authored more than 350 refereed journal and conference papers.

Prof Bayvel said:

"I feel very honoured and privileged to follow in the footsteps of so many illustrious predecessors from the Dept of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at UCL, the first department of electrical engineering in the UK. I am deeply indebted to numerous mentors at UCL and elsewhere, and my dedicated and talented research students and colleagues who have helped me build a wonderful research group".

In addition, Professor Peter Jones (UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering has been awarded an OBE for his voluntary service as transport commissioner who has led research into travel trends transport planning's understanding of behavioral changes in the nature of travel

Finally, Jan Peters, consultant to the Centre for Engineering Education and one f the architects of the UCL Undergraduate Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) has been awarded an MBE for her work supporting women in engineering and science

Professor Nigel Titchener-Hooker, Dean of UCL Engineering said.

"The New Years Honours in 2017 recognised three individuals from our faculty. Polina Bayvel of EEE, Peter Jones from CEGE and Jan Peters who was a key player in shaping of the IEP. In each case they have been recognised for their particular and personal contributions which have been a hallmark of their highly influential and individual careers. They each in their own way provide powerful role models for others, showing great leadership, insight and vision. We are so lucky to have them as colleagues. I know you will be as excited as I was when I read their names over a breakfast coffee! Congratulations to each one of them and huge thanks as well for those who supported their nominations. What a fabulous start to 2017."
