RA MPSoC_FPGA acceleration for remote memory management

Communications and Information Processing Group

We wish to recruit a Research Associate from 15th January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter to work on the EU H2020 project dRedBox, involving the design, development and demonstration of optical and programmable networks for disaggregated Rack-Scale Data Centres. The dRedBox consortium features prominent European R&D organisations, including IBM Research (Ireland), Telefonica (Spain), UCL (UK), University of Thessaly (Greece), the Foundation for Research and Technology (Greece), Huber+Suhner Polatis (UK), Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain), Naudit (Spain), Sintecs (Netherlands), Virtual Open Systems (France) and Kinesense (Ireland).

The appointment will be from 15th January 2018, or as soon as possible therafter and up until 31st December 2018 in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.

The project is at the cutting edge of data centres architectures and cloud/fog computing. We develop prototype hardware and software for nanosecond latency remote memory on-chip and chip-to-chip interconnects. We use cutting edge optical technologies such as integrated silicon photonic transceivers, optical switches and specialty fibres together with high-end MPSoC/FPGA systems to design, experiment and develop a disaggregated data centre network prototype. UCL is leading the activities on optical networks and remote memory management. The Research Associate will be part of Optical Networks Group, Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and work under the supervision of Dr Georgios Zervas.

The candidates will have proven programming, implementation and prototyping experience on Xilinx MPSoC/FPGAs for high-speed and low-latency (e.g. 10/25 Gb/s per lane) interconnects as well as parallel (e.g. DDR4) and serial (e.g. HMC) memory controllers.

A first degree in engineering or physical sciences subject, and proven research expertise in data plane optical networks for data centres is required. Candidates should hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD degree in an area relevant to this research.

The post is Grade 7, however if the successful candidate has not yet completed their PhD, appointment will be made at Research Assistant level at Grade 6 point 24-26, on the UCL salary scale £30,316 and £31,967 per annum (inclusive of London Allowance of £3031 per annum). Payment at Grade 7, point 29 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (including corrections).

Research Associate: Grade 7, salary range from £34,635 to £39,644 (inc. London Allowance of £3031 pa) depending on the experience.
