EU Early Stage Researcher : 4PHOTON

Grade 6 – Full Time

£25,868 - £36,013 per annum (inclusive of London allowance) depending on the ESR fellow's circumstances

Duties and Responsibilities

The Molecular Beam Epitaxy group in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at UCL is seeking to appoint a full-time doctoral candidate / early stage researcher to join the EU-funded Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) 4PHOTON (, on the development of quantum photonic materials and devices. It is a powerful network of experts from a total of 8 European universities and 3 leading companies in the field. 4PHOTON is designed to boost scientific excellence and industrial innovation and enhance researchers' career prospects through developing their skills in entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation.  4PHOTON-ETN provides the doctoral candidate with high quality doctoral-level training including modules of transferable and presentation skills, participation in international conferences and outreach activities. As part of the studies, the doctoral candidate will have secondment periods at; Universitat Hamburg (Germany), University of Sheffield (UK) and Single Quantum (Delft, Netherlands).

The start date is 1st September 2017 for a period of 36 months, we explicitly encourage female researchers to apply.


Key Requirements

At the time the appointment is made, in order to qualify as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action Trainee (EU Early Stage Researchers), candidates must have under four years (full-time equivalent) research experience and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the Master's degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate. The candidates should not have spent more than 12 months in the UK in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.
