Research Associate in Networked Systems – 2 positions available

Communications and Information Systems Group (CISG)

As part of our work within a number of EPSRC, EU and UK-USA funded projects, the UCL EEE Communications and Information Systems Group invites applications for two (2) postdoctoral research position in Networked Systems.

Cloud computing has contributed much to the development of the Internet over the past twenty years or so. However, new applications in the area of IoT, but not only, are pushing the limits of cloud computing to the point where computing at far-away data-centres cannot cope with application requirements. Emerging trends in computing, communications and networking move towards distributed cloud computing and mobile edge- or fog-computing. According to these trends computation moves closer to the edge of the network (hence from cloud to fog) in distributed computation spots to serve newly emerging applications with strict response deadlines. The challenges pertaining to this move defy some of the most fundamental operations taking place in the Internet infrastructure today.

Our current projects focus on a multitude of topics that involve innovative approaches to Edge-/Fog- and Distributed Cloud Computing, Content-Oriented and Information-Centric Networking architectures, Network Function Virtualisation and Software-Defined Networks. We aim to design and develop a communication and information infrastructure for both mobile, opportunistic communication environments, but also for fixed, edge-/fog-computing networks including machine-to-machine communications for the Internet of Things.

We are looking for two talented and experienced postdoctoral researchers, ideally with a few years of experience, to join our team and help us fulfil the projects’ goals, producing quality research, design, development and implementation work and publishing high quality research papers. The successful candidates will work within an established research team in the Communications and Information Systems Group led by Dr Ioannis Psaras, Prof. Miguel Rio and Prof. George Pavlou.

Applicants are required to have a PhD in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or a related field. They also need to have knowledge and/or hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • edge-/fog-computing;
  • distributed cloud infrastructures and applications;
  • content-oriented networks;
  • Network Function Virtualisation (NFV)
  • Software-Defined Networks (SDN);
  • Internet of Things (IoT);
  • Information-Centric Networking (ICN);
  • blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT);
  • opportunistic networks;
  • resource management, routing and congestion control.

Algorithm design skills are essential and a good publication record is also important. The work will involve the design of new models, algorithms and protocols, some of which will need to be implemented in the projects’ testbeds, an effort that will be led by the successful candidate.

The positions are initially for 1 year full-time starting as soon as possible (ideal starting date within January 2018), further funding to support the post may be available. The candidates are required to relocate to London.

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The Research Associate post is Grade 7, starting salary £34,635 per annum and maximum salary £41,864 per annum, both including London Allowance which is currently £3,031 per annum.

If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant. Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded.

Research Assistant: Grade 6, point 24-26. Salary range £30,316 to £31,967 (inc. London Allowance of £3,031 pa).

Interested applicants are encouraged to make Informal enquiries about the posts to Dr Ioannis Psaras (, Prof. Miguel Rio ( and Prof. George Pavlou (
