WEEK 1: 25/9/96 SOAS 0 CCFC 3, attendance: 15
A good start to the season for CCFC with a clean sheet but more importantly 2
points! The first half took a while to get going for both teams, most probably
because most team's summer training comprises of lifting a pint glass
from a table to lips! SOAS were holding off well allowing few chances for
CCFC's strikeforce, but at the same time preventing them from forming any
substantial attack. The deadlock was broken near to the halfway stage when
Simon Walsh put Paul Hajisavvi through to score across the semi circle. Ross
Bates had little to do in goal due to Paul Ayling's hefty shepherding at the
back.
The second half saw Ayling leave the field to be replaced by Scott
Landers. The game moved along more smoothly compared to the push and shove of
the first half. After a few minutes Hajisavvi passed forward to Landers only to
have his path blocked by SOAS's defence. Landers pounced on the loose ball and
it rebounded of the wall into the path of Walsh who neatly slotted it into the
corner of the goal. Again SOAS closed up at the back and it wasn't untill a
strange flicked-up ball from Landers bemused them enougth for Walsh to control
a great half volley into the top corner. Again Bates was spared too much work
in goal by Hajisavvi's defending.
TEAM: Ross Bates, Paul Ayling (Scott Landers-HT), Paul Hajisavvi (5),
Simon Walsh (9,12).
