WEEK 31: 4/6/97: RESULTS:The bookies would be having a nightmare in this year's Logica Cup as both CCFC and now BAM fall to the cup curse. Apologies about the details today as I forgot my notepad. Those at the game witnessed a classic game where the only part of BAM's game that justified the scoreline was their shooting opportunities. Nether the less quality oused out of this game. Sobek opened affairs with a neat cut back on the edge of the box dumbfounded the 'keeper enougth to slot the ball in. Can't recall the second goal but the first scorer hit a free kick off the wall to make it 3 - 0. His collegur latched onto a well timed wing ball and dutifully cut it across the goal to the far right hand corner of the net. Abbott was the only BAM player keeping calm at this stage and was unfortunate not score in the first half.
SOBEK continued to mark tight and play fast in the second half but Abbott's skill was becoming testing. However SOBEK scored first when the unfortunate BAM 'keeper saw the ball bounce of the wall by his goal and go in off his back. BAM weren't all done yet as Abbott stretched to play a pass remenicent of Paul Ince's to Shearer on Saturday (OK it was good). Scott flicked it with the outside of his boot past the diving 'keeper. Abbott added his own mark a minute later when he dragged the ball back and shot dead in bottom left. With only 3 minutes left on the clock a comeback was unlikely but SOBEK's half time substitute made sure with two fantastic goals. A BAM attack broke up with a wild shot wide the rebound landed in the path of the supersub and he elegantly stepped over it with his right foot sending the 'keeper diving and then shot the other way with his left, classy. His next goal was more muscular in keeping with his usuall play, the ball was crossed diagonally and he fended off BAM's defender to rap his foot around the ball half volleying it home. A new name on the cup this season - ULU's my bet.
To round off the day's games SOAS and GEOG put on a show with less tricks but more play. SOAS appeared to have learned to mark for a while and only when Landers failed to follow his man did GEOG break the dealock. Vindicating himself somewhat Landers equalised when the GEOG 'keeper was unsighted by his defender and his shot flew past. Some erratic play from SOAS at the back led to GEOG capitalising on their chances as they went 3 - 1 up. A forth goal went in at only half way through the first half and SOAS looked to be back to old ways. Then a run from Landers saw him put the ball under the 'keeper and the score was 4 - 2. Now SOAS started marking again and made it tougth for GEOG to pass around or shoot with accuracy.
Half time passed and SOAS brought on Gaz and Justin and continued to mark well. Unfortunately SOAS failed to make their possesion tell and gradually thier calmness disappeared and their passing with it. GEOG added another goal to make it safe and a rapidly tiring SOAS weren't ready for such an uphill struggle. GEOG as usuall made good of the chances they had, if they could keep a good structure when defending they could be in for shout this year.
