SOBEK took full points in a fairly subdued contest. Both sides looked pretty sluggish as the game kicked off with only Law putting himself about as usuall. Enevitably it was Law that opened the scoring as he controlled the ball parried away by Ryves' save. As the keeper collected himself Law sidefooted into the bottom left of goal. Rose then took Law's example and started hassling SOBEK back. He was grateful when Coombs threw the ball at him, bringing the ball under instant control on the half way line he thumped the shot into the top right. Law took his turn again, after being tackled he reclaimed the awkward bouncing ball by tucking behind himself, proceeded to wack it past the keeper on the turn. With a minute to go to half time Henderson played a neat ball down the line for Rose to turn on and shoot instantly under the keeper.
After the first half it seemed the team that woke up first could take the points. Both teams made substitutes Sidhu on for Laws (SOBEK) and Curtis for Montieth for GEOG. It was SOBEK who made the late rising. Bailey cut inside a defender in the first minute and tucked it past the keeper. His runs although 9/10 ended up nowhere, were frustrating GEOG and when Sidhu laid a great through ball for Bailey to finish GEOG's resolve disappeared. Bailey completed a deserved hat-trick when he put away the rebound from sidhu's initial shot. GEOG seem to be missing the influential Dobbinson.
SOBEK: Coombs, Bailey, Law (Sidhu), Lermouth
GEOG: Ryves, Henderson (Sayer), Montieth (Curtis)
BAM are finally starting to show some of the mettle which made them league runners-up last season. With a place in the Aegis Cup semi finals bagged they put in another convincing performance against an ACCTS side who hadn't lost in the league. This was done with Abbott out injured and Xenophontos covering in goal. The ever present Flemming was aided by TWO of the most impressive debutants seen in the league. It could be argued that an incredibly un-organised ACCTS aided in their own downfall. It must be said that ACCTS were hardly fielding their usuall side. With Backstron and Barros missing, Shaw was drafted in and Gordon covered in goal.
Flemming had a crack at goal in the first minute and the rebound was placed over the keeper's legs by Bramwell. As ACCTS pushed to equalise, a square ball was put behind the advancing Harrington and Burdett gratefully picked up the ball a hit home for 2 - 0. Bramwell added another in the same minute after running down the wing to poke the shot in the bottom right. The B&B partnership continued when Bramwell forced a great save out of Gordon only for Burdett to poach the rebound. Burdett completed the first half rout when a loose ball found it's way out of the crowd and he hit it past the keeper.
Harrington was pretty miffed about his team's first half, especially the lack of movement, so he decided to do the work himself. It paid off initially as he busied himself around the pitch stopping BAM playing and once his shot rebounded Shaw turned on the ball and dinked it by Xenophontos. The tempory BAM keeper was doing his best impression of a certain Man Utd goalkeeper as he ordered his team-mates about the pitch. Within a minute BAM replied when Burdett deposited Bramwell's rebounded shot in the back of the net. The two combined again to finish BAM's scoring when Bramwell's shot was blocked Burdett again followed up, tucking the ball past Gordon. Harrington got his consolation as he put away a square ball from Shaw to finish of a high tempo match.
BAM: Xenophontos, Bramwell, Burdett, Flemming
ACCTS: Gordon, Harrington, Shaw, Watson
Well, drama like this dosn't come often, everbody would be out on suspension if it did! At half time I was thinking of headlines like "A tale of two keepers", but at the end of the game it was more like "A Card that sees Red". As I don't write headlines it's neither here nor there.
ULU were missing Strawbridge, at the end of the first half they were longing for him. The quick drafting of rugby player Robards to goal may have made up the numbers, but they hadn't quite informed him of the art of goalkeeping. Within a minute Kettle was the first to make a dent, he turn on the half way line, shot of the wall and it nut-megged the keeper. ULU fought back. Firstly, Avery tackled well and the ball wound up in Ferrell's path for him to wack a shot from long range in the bottom right. They added another when Ferrell produced a great save out of the ever impressive Phalp but Ferrell was quick to the rebound and struck the volley home. BIRK then pushed out and Robard was lucky not to hand them a penalty as he stepped out of his area. The resulting freekick saw Robard thump the shot clear only to watch it fly back past him after rebounding off Ferrell. They added another in the same minute when Card cut inside his marker and shot low past the keeper. BIRK were pilling it on at this point and when Burgis finished the first half scoring with a run down the wing and shot, it seemed BIRK had the points coming.
All cliche's about 'a game of two halves' etc can be applied as you see fit, for the second half saw a dramatic change in direction. BIRK started as they finished, as Card made it 2 - 5 when he reacted quickly to a Robard save. ULU responded with a hat-trick of goals in the second minute. Avery took the ball round most of BIRK untill Burgis managed to get a foot in, the loose ball fell to Ferrell who promptly put it away. He added another with a blast of a shot from a tackle by Avery. Kettle was then substituted by Pitt, the latter took a long time to get on the field of play. The ref deemed it too long and Pitt's first contribution to the league was to get booked (later withdrawn). Amounst the mayhem that followed Tassell, who had spent most of his time guarding his own penalty box, controlled a forceful pass and tucked it past Phalp to make 5 - 5.
Card became much annoyed by his team's situation and when Avery ran down the wing he slid in with no apparent attempt at getting the ball. A booking was earned which was his second and would have seen him miss his sides next two games. He decided to make it three as he 'advised' the referee of his downfallings in refereeship and promptly walked. ULU took over after that, Avery squared for another Ferrell blast. The resulting centre saw Avery shoot with his second touch to make it 7 - 5. Tassell cut inside a dejected Burgis and shot into the bottom right. Avery added another when he found himself in considerable space with a slight deflection and Tassell finished off proceedings with his hat-trick.
At the moment only a two point difference seperates the top and seventh positions.
ULU: Robards, Avery, Ferrell, Tassell
BIRK: Phalp, Burgis, Card, Kettle (Pitt)
