WEEK 17: 04/02/98: RESULTS:

UCL HOSPITAL 2 - 2 BIRKBECK

Scant reports today - I was covering the second ref. A game filled with excellent ball control saw the points shared. UCLH scored the first half's only goal when Pieris hit a poor clearance into the far left of goal.

UCLH extended their lead in the first minute when Sanderson hit a half volley home for his eleventh of the season. BIRK responded quickly when Tisi, returning after a long injury spell, turned neatly on the ball and punished some hesitant defending. Burgis, a half time sub for Clark, equalised for BIRK after putting away a rebound off the post.

UCLH: Bowen, O'Driscoll, Pieris, Sanderson
BIRK: Phalp, Brown, Clark (Burgis), Tisi

SENATE HOUSE ACCOUNTS 4 - 4 UCL ZOOLOGY

Points shared again in a game which lent itself to physical, rather than, skillful football. At half time ZOO came in with a 1 - 0 lead thanks to Puls who hit Cumming's throw out on the turn past Gordon.

"A tight game" we all thought at the interval, not accounting for what was to follow. Within the first minute ACCTS hit three past ZOO to alter the scoreline dramatically. Shaw hasn't taken long to get settled in the league and he was a major player in all the goals. Some sloppy defending at the edge of ZOO's area saw him hit the equaliser as he nicked the ball away and past the typically impressive Cummings. He scored again with a run down the right wing and a shot across goal into the bottom left. A sublime backheal which squared to Harrington to set him up for the third sent shockwaves through the ZOO team. Gordon then produced a dramatic double save to add to ZOO's woe.

ZOO decided that the second minute belonged to them as the pulled level. Wood's long shot went narrowly wide but landed nicely for Brandon to hit the rebound in. Puls added his second amoungst a crowd of players near the half way line, the shot sailed past an unsighted Gordon. Brandon, who was having a bad day by his standards, added to his problems by picking up a booking for the 3ft rule. Shaw then hit his hat-trick a minute later when he looked up in space and hit the bottom left. ZOO had two minutes to find an equaliser but left it untill 30 seconds to go before Puls hit his first league hat-trick with quick reactions to a rebound. ACCTS: Gordon, Harrington, Shaw, Watson
ZOO: Cummings, Brandon, Puls, Wood

COMPUTER CENTRE FC 1 - 2 SOBEK

CCFC may well feel they were robbed of a point today, I'm inclined to agree with them, but no more than a point.

This was a typically tight CCFC - SOBEK fixture where either side wasn't about to give much away. Law made the most of one moment of slack CCFC marking when he turned on Conroy's throw out to hit a first time shot into the bottom left. CCFC leved a minute later when Ayling hit a low drive from the half way line. CCFC had the better of the first half but squandered countless clear cut chances.

Bailey's runs had proved so far relatively fruitless, that is until the second minute when he ran into a mass of space to hit a cross-goal shot into the bottom left. Then controversy followed. Refereeing is all about split second decisions, but had the ref gave a moments more thought to his actions CCFC would have a point in the bag. Conroy, not known for his goalkeeping talents, had already stepped out of his area in the first half to gain advantage, clearly did it again. The ref booked him, but only gave a free-kick, giving him the benefit of a doubt concerning sliding out of the area. Unfortunately, such a booking is strongly associated with a penalty kick, and as such CCFC can feel agreived. This, I hasten to add, is NOT an official view. Ayling came close in the last minute when his shot rattled the post, but HUMAN error denied them a point. Good use of their game in hand should appease most grudges. Watch out ZOO!

CCFC: Heagney, Ayling, Banks (Dyer), Hajisavvi
SOBEK: Conroy, Bailey, Laws, Lermouth
