CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS – INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
All authors of papers presented at the 5th Biennial International Threshold Concepts Conference are invited to submit a full paper of their presentation.
The papers will be published in one of the following:
Conference Online Proceedings
- The rapid publication site for submissions will be a Conference Online Proceedings Website.
- The papers will also be referenced under discipline–specific headings on the Thresholds website at http://www.ee.ucl.ac.uk/~mflanaga/thresholds.html. This is now the established central resource for information on Threshold Concepts research and is very widely consulted internationally.
Special Edition of PESTLHE
- A number of submitted papers will be selected by an editorial panel to be included in a special edition of PESTLHE (Practice and Evidence of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education). PESTLHE is a well established peer-reviewed online higher education journal organised through the universities of Bristol, Glasgow and Durham. It is fully referenced with an ISSN number and has been operating for many years. The Special Edition will be guest edited by Professor Ray Land and Dr Julie Rattray with Dr Robert Matthew who is a permanent editor of the journal. If you would be happy for your paper to be selected for inclusion please indicate this with your submission.
- For copyright reasons papers included as a journal paper cannot also be published online, but the titles of papers included in the special edition will be indicated on the Thresholds website.
Conference Book
- A number of submitted papers will be selected by an editorial panel to be included in a book to be published in 2015 edited by Ray Land, Jan H.F. Meyer and Mick Flanagan. The working title of the volume is ‘Threshold Concepts in Practice’. If you would be happy for your paper to be selected for inclusion please indicate this with your submission.
- For copyright reasons papers included as book chapters cannot also be published online, but the titles of papers included in the volume will be indicated on the Thresholds website.
Choice of Publication Options
- Please indicate, with your submission, which publication options you are happy for your paper to be considered.
- A paper that has been submitted for inclusion in the edited book or the special edition of PESTLHE but fails to be selected for inclusion in the book or the journal will, author(s) permitting, be published as part of the Conference Online Proceedings. But of course it will also be perfectly acceptable, if the author(s) so prefer(s), to put an extended abstract (or similar) in the online proceedings as an alternative to a full paper, permitting the author(s) then to still try submitting a full paper for acceptance elsewhere. If the paper were subsequently published a pointer link from the proceedings to the published source will be added.
Paper Submission Instructions
- Please submit all papers for consideration to ray.land@durham.ac.uk using the subject line ‘Threshold Concepts paper’.
- Deadlines
- Completed papers should be submitted by Friday 17 October 2014 and those interested in inclusion in the edited book will be informed whether their paper has been selected by 17 November 2014. Those submitting papers for inclusion in the Conference Online Proceedings will also be informed of when their papers have been published online.
-
Paper format
- Papers should be no more than 5000 words in length (excluding references and diagrams) and in either Word or PDF format, but please allow documents to be in an editable format (ie without editing/reassembly restrictions).
- Please use Times New Roman font.
- Please use APA style for references [Guide to APA referencing].
- Please also ensure your paper has a clear title, includes names of all authors and their affiliation to institutions and a full set of references, and acknowledgements where necessary or appropriate.
- There is no specified organisational format, provided that the overall structure of your piece is clearly signalled. The IMRAD standard format (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) is not required but may be used. Most will probably adopt a more discursive prose style. A style sheet for papers submitted for inclusion in the book may be found at Style Sheet
- Please note that any illustrations or diagrams for the book can only be printed in black and white format, but of course the online proceedings or online journal can accommodate full colour.
- For the edited book please also submit a brief biographical sketch of each named author (up to 150 words each).
- Please include a word count, excluding references and any diagrams, with your submission.
If your paper has multiple authors it will be assumed that you have consulted with all your collaborators in preparing your submission.
If you have any queries about any of the above please do get in touch [ray.land@durham.ac.uk].
Last update: 17th September 2014.
